In the 1990s, some German towns and cities started a visiting programme for former forced labourers, mainly from Eastern Europe. People were invited by the cities to come to Germany and often visited the places where they had worked or been imprisoned. Critics argued that this was a purely symbolic gesture and criticised the lack of compensation for the victims. As part of the visit programmes, many interviews with contemporary witnesses and public discussions with contemporary witnesses took place.
