Remembrance culture describes the way in which a society remembers and interprets its past. It includes the collective memory of historical events, personalities and traditions that give a society its identity. Remembrance culture can be seen in the preservation and construction of memorials, monuments and museums, as well as in the organisation of days of remembrance and commemorations. Which events are commemorated and how is a matter of political debate. Many places of remembrance dedicated to the Nazi era in Germany were created in response to the demands of survivors or are the result of local history initiatives.
