Term used by the Allies for all civilians who had been deported to Germany or who were stateless. In addition to forced labourers, who formed the largest group, they included people liberated from concentration camps. Immediately after the end of the war, there were more than ten million DPs in Germany. Many of them were housed in DP camps, which were often set up in former forced labour camps and concentration camps, but also in schools and military barracks.
