Work education camps were penal camps set up mainly for foreign civilian forced labourers and political opponents. For example, forced labourers could be interned for a limited period of a few weeks for attempting to escape, arriving late for work or “loafing” at work. The work education camps were run by the Gestapo and conditions were similar to those in concentration camps. The internees had to perform hard physical labour. After internment in a labour education camp, the forced labourers were sent back to their factories or interned in a concentration camp.
