Nuremberg Trials

Between 1945 and 1946, judges at the International Military Tribunal set up by the Allies tried leading Nazis in the trials of the major war criminals. The trials took place in the city of Nuremberg, which is why the trials are known as the Nuremberg Trials. Several leading Nazis, including Adolf Hitler, Josef Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich, were already dead. Of the 24 defendants, twelve were sentenced to death and ten were hanged. Twelve further trials of Nazi war criminals were held at the same site until 1949. These included doctors, generals, members of death squads, lawyers, diplomats and heads of armaments companies such as Friedrich Flick.
